Hello,

We are having the shutters and windows replaced in the house. The question is whether to choose plastic shutters or aluminum ones. Plastic is considerably cheaper, which is why we are leaning towards it. Are there any people here with experience? Would we be making the wrong decision with this?

We are paying an additional 340€ for upgrading from plastic to aluminum roller shutters on 10 windows.

Do you have offers for both options?

I stopped counting how many slats I've replaced over four years with plastic shutters that were 20 years old. I only have a reference for aluminum after a few years. If the price difference is minimal, I would always choose aluminum. If the difference had been in the four-digit range for us, I would have gone with plastic as well. Plastic has been used for many, many decades, so what can really go wrong with it (even today)? I think both have their pros and cons. Dark aluminum shutters tend to expand more and retain heat longer, which is rather counterproductive in midsummer. Plastic slats break more easily if they freeze to the window sill and are then pulled up. Aluminum is more UV-resistant than plastic, and so on.

This will probably spark a lively debate about everyone’s personal favorite. :-)

We used a mix: aluminum for the floor-to-ceiling and wide windows, and uPVC for the rest. That was how it was stated in the first version of the general contractor’s building specifications and it seemed reasonable. I don’t know about price differences.

Looking at my parents’ house, I would probably choose aluminum for the south side and possibly also the west side. At first, we replaced the plastic slats on some windows. Eventually, we decided to switch to aluminum. On the east and north sides, the UV exposure is lower, so in my opinion, plastic can be used there as well. It also depends a bit on the window size. The wider the window, the more I would tend to prefer aluminum.

One reason why aluminum is predominantly used today is the fact that it is available in any desired color. I believe the industry did not switch to aluminum primarily because of technical necessity or innovations, but rather due to customer demand for colored roller shutters. As far as I know, the color options for plastic are limited.
