Good morning,

I have a garage attached to the house with an interior wall height of 3.3 meters (11 feet) all around, topped with a hipped roof. I wanted this height because the garage will be used either with a mobile single-post lift or a parking lift. The roof is cantilevered with a substantial beam projecting from the house structure.

A standard sectional door would limit the garage opening height behind the door to 2.5 meters (8 feet), which is not sufficient for my needs. A sectional door with overhead tracks is also not possible due to the hipped roof.

Therefore, the only real options are a rolling shutter door or a side-hinged sectional door.

Both are quite uncommon in private home construction, so I haven’t found many user experiences.

Has anyone installed either of these door types? Are there any notable manufacturers besides Normstahl and Hörmann? Or does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Here is my current assessment:

Rolling shutter door:

+ simple technology / low maintenance
+ affordable
+ very compact

- slow operation
- painted slats will eventually get scratched
- general appearance

Side-hinged sectional door:

+ very fast
+ pedestrian door function
+ elegant design

- very expensive
- the wall where it runs must be kept clear

Like a barn door with two wings that swing outward? It can also be installed with an electric motor and remote control. You just need enough space in front of the garage.

Hello,
I would choose a roller shutter door, for example (Roma), with aluminum slats that are foam-filled and anodized, not coated.

Hello,

we have a dark gray, 5.50 m (18 ft) wide sectional door and yesterday, in direct sunlight and about 18°C (64°F) outside temperature, my husband noticed that the door had bent outwards significantly, creating a gap wide enough for his whole hand to fit through.

Have any of you experienced something similar with dark, large doors? I have heard of this happening before, but our door is supposed to be specially reinforced to prevent this...

Not noticed, but we have been warned about this several times and were advised to choose a version with more ribs.

@WildThing: Orientation of the gate? It seems to face south in your case, otherwise hardly any sunlight would reach there, right?
