Hello Dear Community,

We have bought a house and have renewed almost everything that needed updating.
Only one thing we were a bit naive about and postponed to “sometime later” was the electrical installation.
The house was built in 1958, and some electrical work was done in the 1970s. Nothing more.
Of course, everything works, but there is still a big concern that something might happen eventually.

Just out of curiosity… is it possible to completely renew the entire house wiring while still living in the house? And if yes, how long does such a process usually take and what might it cost?
Thank you very much in advance, and I wish you all a pleasant evening.

I once witnessed a complete electrical renovation in a two-family house. I can only agree with @apokolok—no wall remains undamaged, there’s an enormous amount of dirt, and afterwards all the walls are cut open…

I have no idea if it’s possible to plan this "like a general staff operation," starting from a renewed distribution board and working through the house room by room… You would have to keep moving from one room to another yourself, right? Where the painter has already been or the electrician hasn’t arrived yet? The tradespeople would probably find that hilarious! If the electrician has to come every week for a single room, and the painter does the same…

In the mentioned two-family house, the lower apartment was occupied; the electrical wiring dated back to 1936… The electrician originally even refused to reconnect the cables. In any case, nothing was renewed there… it’s still like that.

A few years ago, my mother bought an apartment, which had old electrical wiring. To be able to run the dishwasher and washing machine in the kitchen without any concerns, she only had the electrical system in that room updated. In the hallway, the cables currently run surface-mounted to the circuit breaker panel. I believe the panel was also upgraded or expanded. I don’t remember how long the work took or how much mess it caused. She had it done before moving in.
