ᐅ Issues with the bathroom contractor even before work has started.

Good evening everyone.

I have a question. About four weeks ago, we visited bathroom showrooms for our house build and selected items for both bathrooms extensively. Unfortunately, we did not receive any list of the selected products from the showroom.

Today, we received an offer from the installer through whom we now want to order the items. The problem is:

1. The offer does not include a detailed list of the components, just modules like: Bathtub including labor €2000. Toilet including labor €1400.

2. The company refuses to provide a breakdown of the components and to list labor costs separately. Their argument is that we only want a shopping list.

3. For deducting the fixed-price components, for example, only €100 is deducted for toilet plus labor.

I feel somewhat taken advantage of here, or is this normal practice?

But if he keeps going like this, we will start looking for a new contractor for this trade.

I think you should explain this to him clearly and then follow through. Otherwise, you won’t be happy.

Do you mean the exact designation of the bathtub, for example? We received a detailed list that included the desired model with the item number and any additional charge. I don’t quite understand—when you buy something, you usually get a clear description in the offer. Otherwise, how would you know what you are getting and paying for?

Regards
Sabine

Hello Sabine,

exactly! I think so too!
He doesn’t even want to separate labor and materials.

Well. Threatening seems to be the only solution!

Well, I think it's fine that the working hours are not listed.

Do you really only have a total sum and nothing else?

I have various items: shower fixtures, toilet fixtures, bathtub fixtures, and washbasin fixtures.

However, it doesn’t help me if I can’t decide modularly whether to use the same setup in every bathroom or to choose the cheaper option for the smaller one.

That’s why I need:
Items 1-n including item numbers
Costs for labor, etc. – this is essential just to create transparency.

Hello, I don’t know how tight the craftsmen are where you are. In some places, they can unfortunately get away with anything. But if I’m not happy with them, I just buy elsewhere. And if they get really cheeky, I take the entire trade out of the overall contract and manage it myself. That was no problem with our developer as long as it was an isolated case.
