ᐅ Issues with the bathroom contractor even before work has started.

Good evening everyone.

I have a question. About four weeks ago, we visited bathroom showrooms for our house build and selected items for both bathrooms extensively. Unfortunately, we did not receive any list of the selected products from the showroom.

Today, we received an offer from the installer through whom we now want to order the items. The problem is:

1. The offer does not include a detailed list of the components, just modules like: Bathtub including labor €2000. Toilet including labor €1400.

2. The company refuses to provide a breakdown of the components and to list labor costs separately. Their argument is that we only want a shopping list.

3. For deducting the fixed-price components, for example, only €100 is deducted for toilet plus labor.

I feel somewhat taken advantage of here, or is this normal practice?

You won’t be able to fix the issue of not having documented the selections yourself; in other words, your only option now is to go through the whole process again. That means searching for models and prices from an independent provider, listing them, and adding “or equivalent” to ensure that alternative models aren’t of inferior quality.

I find this approach quite odd. Even in specifications for construction services, specific brands are usually named, and at least the retail prices for end consumers don’t need to be kept secret. Model designations—being more of a formal commitment—are generally expected, if anything.

After all, what you really want is to ensure that what was chosen is actually installed later. For that reason, I would have expected a protocol of the selection process (simply listing the chosen items by name). Why did you leave without one back then?

The material list is not the same as the selection list. It only refers to the model names of the items chosen during the selection process. After all, it’s possible that the person from the specialist exhibition wrote something completely different on the sheet. You want to avoid confusion and mistakes.

Regarding the breakdown of materials and labor costs, I fully agree with the contractor. The price is shown at the bottom right. If it’s not, the next customer is already waiting.

I can’t do that because I’m not even told which products are being offered to me, or I only have blocks that have been grouped together.

Try buying a kitchen. The price is kind of “rolled.” Not exactly; but there are block prices—meaning an additional meter of cabinet might not cost anything more because you move up to the next pricing tier.

And the same applies to bathrooms with many installers. The profit margin is defined for the whole project instead of calculating it for each individual component.

That does not meet the requirements of a commercially correct offer nor the desired transparency.

Are you an end customer, or are you acting as a business?

Are you the end customer or acting as a buyer on behalf of a business?

My kitchen purchase was very transparent, including the individual prices, explanations, etc.

I am acting as the end customer, which does not exempt an honorable seller from providing accurate offers.

BUT: this morning the list arrived with a lot of fuss... including his purchase prices, which I am not interested in.

Well, I would say persistence pays off.

He can do that. But the offer includes items like "Binford 6100 Turbo Refrigerator" and "Traditionia Space Edition GTI Oven with all sorts of extras." Naming only the total price is fine, but no one really offers "6.80m (22 feet) of kitchen with two sinks," do they?

Well then. I would say persistence pays off.

That’s good to hear. I actually expected something different.
