ᐅ Planning an Open Kitchen. Is This a Load-Bearing Wall?

Good evening everyone,

We are considering removing the wall between our kitchen and living room to create an open-plan kitchen.

Now the question is whether the wall that would need to be removed is load-bearing. According to the plans, the wall thickness is 11.5 cm (4.5 inches).

The plans also indicate that on the ground floor, walls with thicknesses of 24 cm (9.5 inches) and 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) are load-bearing.

Exterior walls: 24 cm (9.5 inches)
Load-bearing interior walls: 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) / 24 cm (9.5 inches)
Non-load-bearing interior walls: 11.5 cm (4.5 inches)

What confuses me as a non-expert is the part labeled "Non-load-bearing 11.5 cm."

On the ground floor, there are exactly two walls with this 11.5 cm thickness.

Is it possible to determine from the plans whether the wall between the kitchen and living room is load-bearing?

Only a structural engineer can tell you that, so you should hire one. On the upper floor, a wall may be positioned above the kitchen wall, or the roof may be supported by the kitchen wall.

The " " only refers to "Load-bearing interior walls," so the full line actually reads "Non-load-bearing interior walls 11.5cm (4.5 inches)."

Since load-bearing and non-load-bearing interior walls can both be 11.5cm (4.5 inches) thick, this does not really clarify anything.

A wall can be non-load-bearing but still act as a brace and therefore be required. For that, only a structural engineer can provide proper guidance. After all, the house does not have that many interior walls...
