Hello

I am currently renovating and have a problem. The previous owners smoked a lot in the living room, and the wood-burning stove was also leaking. As a result, there are heavy smoke deposits on the upper floor. I painted the wooden ceiling in the hallway with two coats of sealing primer plus four coats of professional-grade paint. Even then, the smoke stains still show through.

Now I would like to do a better job in the living room. The wallpaper has been removed and the walls have been painted, so that part is fine. However, there is a masonry stone arch that is painted white and stained with smoke. I tried stripping it, but that didn’t help much. Then I treated the stone arch with a grinder and wire brush. After the first two coats of wall paint, the brown smoke stains are still coming through.

What could I use to paint over the stone arch to reliably block the smoke stains? It can be more expensive if it really works.

Regards

Sebastian

That is normal; it will always keep corroding through. Back then, we had to use expensive paint—I unfortunately don’t remember the name. However, after 5 years, you always have to recoat.

Try using a sealing primer

I also thought about waterproofing primer, but which one is actually effective?
