Hello dear forum community,

Our house construction has been slow-going, but finally we’re approaching the final stretch. 🙄
Within the next two months at the latest, we need to have the outdoor split evaporator unit installed for our Ochsner air-to-water heat pump.

Now we have two options: either place it in the (quite large) front yard or in our west garden (likely a vegetable garden), which would probably be visible from the small kitchen terrace.
This raises the question of how we could camouflage or conceal it in the front yard, and how unsightly it actually is. 😀

Who should suffer, the guests and passersby or us?? 😉

That’s why I’m asking here among those who have already completed their house build and are already working on landscaping and the garden.

Could you please share photos of your outdoor units here in this thread?
It would really help me to see these units in their actual spot, maybe even with some greenery or garden surroundings.

I know uploading photos takes a bit of effort, so thanks a thousand times in advance!

Your previous post was just a few seconds before mine. Horizontally, that is naturally difficult.

But vertically, it works perfectly fine.

Our neighbors have their outdoor unit (apartment building) placed in the front yard. The thing is quite large and, in my opinion, it spoils the entire front yard.

Ours is mounted on the back wall of the garage. We initially had the same problem deciding where to place it, and then alpha innotec introduced units designed for wall mounting. They look similar to an air conditioning unit.
By the way, this solution was also more efficient, cheaper, and it saves the need for a foundation. You just need to have gravel underneath.

The outdoor unit from Ochsner? In my opinion, very ugly 😱

The pictures posted here so far show conventional outdoor units and have little to do with the Ochsner outdoor unit. Since the fan faces upwards, you can enclose it; just make sure that the airflow is not obstructed on any side and that condensate can drain without freezing. You also need to clarify with Ochsner the maximum allowable distance between the heat pump and the split evaporator.

Oh, and our clients placed this rather nice unit in the front yard next to the garbage bins; that’s where it is least conspicuous 😀

They are always placed next to the trash bins in the neighboring development in our area as well :-) Our neighbors have one from Mitsubishi, and it is really loud. However, it bothers them the most since the unit is positioned unfavorably close to their patio...

What is the advantage of having the fan exhaust upwards? Those models always seem to be very large.

You’ll have to ask the manufacturers 😉

In the case of our aforementioned clients, the outdoor unit is somewhat quieter than typical outdoor units (although that is always quite subjective. In my opinion, every refrigerator is louder), but the overall noise level inside the house has increased significantly.

Therefore, I doubt whether replacing the originally proposed system with the Austrian supplier’s solution was really sensible. Especially since the Ochsner system also requires a buffer tank, and the heating system (HAR) was obviously not designed for this setup; our clients made the decision to switch after the walls were already built and the rough installation was completed. This will surely make routine maintenance quite interesting ...
