I have steel door frames in my apartment that extend under the screed. Removing them proved to be only somewhat practical for two doors that needed to be replaced anyway.
The only issue for me is the appearance of the old steel frames; otherwise, they are basically fine.
I’ve read that there are also “clip-on” frames, which are purely cosmetic and cover the old steel frame to achieve a modern look.
On average, you can expect up to a 70mm (3 inches) loss in width and about a 35mm (1.4 inches) loss in height.
I can accept the loss in height, but 7cm (3 inches) in width is quite significant.
Has anyone installed these renovation frames before and can share their experience?
How do they hold up over time, is the loss in width worth it, and so on?

I think the door frames and doors make a big difference in the overall appearance of an apartment, and I don’t necessarily want to leave them out.
So far, I’ve pushed door frames and doors to the back of the list because the budget had other priorities. But now that the cost is manageable, I’m reconsidering.
A renovation door frame costs, from what I’ve seen, not much (100–200€). If the quality is good, I will probably go with that option.
However, I would first like to hear some long-term experiences from others.

...??? Painted steel door frames look more modern than the common frames, but the painting needs to be done well (-> matte finish, roller, etc.).
Our “high-quality” frames look old-fashioned compared to those from my parents’ house built in 1978... Well, or maybe just ordinary.
