Hello everyone,

I have been having an issue for some time now with the drawers of my IKEA Malm dressers being very difficult to open. Specifically, they stick when pulled and seem to catch or hang on the side metal or plastic rollers. After some research, I found out that the rollers or drawer slides might be damaged or worn out.

I’m interested in how to best repair or replace these rollers myself. Are there any proven techniques or tips to restore smooth movement? Is it usually enough to clean and lubricate the rollers, or are full replacement parts often necessary?

It would be great if someone with experience could explain the exact process—what tools are needed, which replacement parts fit, and what to pay special attention to, so the drawer runs smoothly again without sticking or wobbling.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Most MALM drawers have plastic rollers that can deform over time or accumulate dirt. First, fully pull out the drawer and clean the rollers with a damp cloth. Then apply some silicone spray or a special lubricant designed for plastic glides. If the rollers are damaged, usually the only solution is to replace them, which IKEA offers as spare parts.

Hello Takoro,

here are some practical tips regarding your issue with stiff MALM drawer rollers:

MALM drawers often use so-called runner rails with small rollers or roller wheel assemblies that glide along a track. Damaged or worn rollers typically cause increased resistance or significant signs of wear.

The following procedure has proven effective:

1. Pull the drawer out completely and remove it entirely.
2. Carefully inspect the rollers and runner rails: Are the rollers loose, bent, cracked, or just dirty?
3. Cleaning tip: Clean the runner rails with a mild detergent; avoid harsh chemicals. Rollers can be cleaned with warm water and a cloth.
4. If you suspect dry running: Spray all contact surfaces lightly with silicone spray or a PTFE-based lubricant.
5. If the roller mechanism is damaged (cracks or extensive wear), replacement is recommended. Use original spare parts, as the width, diameter, and mounting of the roller are crucial.

Question: Do you know whether your MALM drawer uses sliding or ball-bearing rollers? This affects the repair effort.

Also: Has the chest of drawers been subject to heavy loads or stored in a damp environment? This negatively impacts rollers and tracks.

In general, replacement rollers can be found at IKEA or various online shops. Installation is straightforward, usually involving screws or clips. It’s important to check all moving parts afterward to ensure there is no play.

I can gladly recommend a step-by-step guide with pictures if you like.

Best regards!

Question: Do you know whether your MALM drawer uses sliding or ball-bearing runners?

This distinction is important because ball-bearing runners on rails operate more smoothly and are less prone to dirt, whereas sliding rollers tend to be more sensitive to dirt and require more frequent lubrication.

Additionally, I recommend:
1. Avoid using aggressive solvents for cleaning, as they may damage plastic parts.
2. After cleaning, use a silicone spray for lubrication, since oil-based products attract dust.
3. If there are signs of wear, replacement is unavoidable; IKEA offers original spare parts through their service.

Also note that for some MALM models, entire runner rails can be replaced, not just the rollers.

Further tips:
- Work on a clean, non-slip surface with the drawer removed.
- Carefully document the disassembly, especially if clips or plugs need to be removed.

This way, you can both fix malfunctions and extend the lifespan of the drawer.
