Hello everyone,
I am looking for a lawn mower for my garden. The garden has the following details:
- Flat terrain
- 400 m² (4,300 sq ft) area
I have shortlisted the following lawn mowers:
- Husqvarna LC 247 (no self-propulsion)
- Husqvarna LC 247S (self-propelled)
- Husqvarna LC 247SP (self-propelled, higher power)
1. Which of these three models would you recommend?
2. Do I even need a self-propelled mower for this size of garden?
3. How do the maneuverability and turning capability compare between mowers with and without self-propulsion? Are there any differences?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Jörg

Sorry, but the question sounds something like this to me... If it absolutely has to be a petrol-powered model – have you ever actually mowed with a modern battery-powered mower? – then I would definitely avoid a self-propelled drive for that lawn area. Who needs that on flat terrain?

Incredible dedication to the cause! Someone asks a specific question and gets overwhelmed with unnecessary explanations and lectures.
To give a straightforward answer: yes, a wheel drive is fine. Increasing the power is not necessary. Yes, Husqvarna is a good brand, but our AL Ko with Briggs and Stratton has been running for eight years and performs well at around 360-380 (metric horsepower units), which is clearly less than Husqvarna.
Choose one with a mulching function; with regular mowing, your lawn will become fine, dense, and weed-free—just like with a robotic mower.

Well, battery-powered lawn mowers aren’t always ideal either. When the grass gets a bit long and is still slightly wet, you run into problems. The grass tends to stick to the housing, and the motor can’t throw it into the grass catcher anymore. For 400m2 (about 4,300 sq ft), you should consider getting a second battery, as the manufacturer’s runtime claims are only achievable under perfect conditions.
Also, for 400m2 (about 4,300 sq ft) and a flat lawn, a self-propelled drive isn’t really worth it. It’s better to invest that money in a wider cutting deck and a larger grass catcher.
My next mower will either be a robotic one or a classic petrol mower.

Our best mower was in use from 1991 to 2010. It was a Stiga two-stroke mulching mower from the professional series. At first, I had about 1000 square meters (10,764 square feet) to mow – later, at the terraced house, it was naturally overqualified. But the durability was excellent. It was definitely worth the 700 DM. It started immediately and ran on a 1:50 fuel-oil mixture, with no trouble handling steep slopes. I can only recommend these Stiga parts for larger lawns.
