Hello everyone,

We are planning to have our outdoor area worked on this year on short notice by a local excavation company.

Location: Baden-Württemberg

At the moment, I have no idea how reasonable the pricing is. Since we have scheduled everything at very short notice, we currently only have a quote from this one company. They would also complete the work by the end of July.

We would like to proceed, but only if the price is really attractive. Otherwise, we would have taken more time to carefully plan everything with multiple quotes.

Overall, everything seems quite good to us. We will have a detailed discussion later, but we would like to know how competitive the offer is price-wise:

Here are some prices / excerpts from the quote, as I currently have no experience in the landscaping and civil engineering sector and cannot assess it:

1. Skilled labor for road and civil engineering INCLUDING mini excavator: 30 hours at 85.00 € net (the hourly wage is crucial here; the hours alone don’t mean much since you don’t know the scope yet).

2. Skilled labor for road and civil engineering: 40 hours at 52.00 € net

6. Crushed mineral gravel 0-45 --- 140 tons ---: 22.50 € net / ton --> including delivery, installation, and compaction

7. Concrete for curbs (material + labor) --> 5 m³ (6.5 yd³) --> 190.00 € / m³ net

8. High curbstones / edging (delivery, installation, and concrete) --> 80 pieces --> 50.00 € / piece net

The cost of a curb stone depends on the specific model. You can deduct the value-added tax from the hardware store price. €45 net for installation is about the right range in that offer. I think that's a lot.

I also think that’s a lot... Considering that the hourly wage can or should be around €50-60 net.

For setting a concrete curb stone, he probably doesn’t need more than about 15 minutes per piece on average, even for around 80 pieces, right?

Some take a whole week for that.

We received a complete quote 3 years ago,
everything included for xx thousand euros.
The landscaper will be considering whether to offer you 10, 20, 40, or 80 thousand euros,
negotiation is allowed.

For installing a concrete low curb, it effectively takes no more than 15 minutes per piece when doing around 80, right?
I did this over the weekend with my neighbor. We installed 20 meters (65.6 feet) in just over 2 hours, plus the cost: 66€ for 0.5 m³ (0.65 yd³) of concrete and nearly 6€ per anthracite low curb (all prices including tax). We picked up the concrete and curbs with a trailer to avoid delivery fees.

The area had been prepared and gravelled beforehand, but that is usually itemized separately in the quote.

He probably means that the curb stone is made of concrete. There are also granite ones, but those are definitely much more expensive.
Yes, landscape gardeners earn well and are always fully booked. And above all, this is a trade without a master certification requirement. Anyone can become a landscape gardener. So go ahead and start working with me. Of course, at a friendly price. You have to practice first.
