ᐅ KALLAX Shelves Warped After Damp Cleaning – What Can Be Done?

eminkarHello everyone,
I have the following problem: After thoroughly cleaning my IKEA KALLAX shelves with moisture, some areas have become wavy. It appears that the moisture caused the particleboard to swell, and the surface is no longer flat. My question is: What can I do to remove or at least reduce the waviness of the shelves without having to replace them entirely? I would like to solve the problem as sustainably as possible and am looking for advice on the best approach—such as drying methods, aftercare, or even sealing. Does anyone have experience with this issue? Thanks!

Hello eminkar,
I assume these are the typical KALLAX particle boards coated with a thin melamine finish. Moisture usually penetrates the edges or damaged areas beneath the coating, causing the underlying fiberboard to swell.
First, I recommend drying the affected panel in a suitable place with a consistent room temperature and good air circulation—ideally laid flat and without any load. Heating air or direct sunlight can cause rapid drying and warping, which may worsen the damage.
If pronounced warping remains after drying, there are a few options:
1. Placing a flat board with light weight on top for several days can help reduce minor unevenness.
2. Careful sanding of the edges is possible for refinishing, but be sure not to damage the melamine surface.
3. In some cases, applying a thin layer of wood stabilizer or wood glue, possibly combined with clamping, can help, though this is labor-intensive.
Important: How long did you let the shelves dry after wet cleaning, and how much humidity was in the room afterward? Could you describe your cleaning method? This would help better assess the cause.

I know that well! I once had KALLAX shelves that became completely warped after wiping them with a damp cloth 🙂
My tip: Just give them plenty of time to dry, preferably lay them flat and weigh them down with a smooth, heavy board. This often leads to significant improvement.
And above all: Don’t use heat or a hairdryer, as that causes more harm than good! 🙂 Good luck, it will get better!

Heated air or direct sunlight can cause rapid drying and warping,That's right, this is often underestimated. Let it dry patiently, preferably for several days.
And if the surface is open-pored, you could also carefully rework it with very fine sandpaper.

I understand your issue and would like to suggest a structured approach.
First of all, it is important to know that the particle boards from KALLAX are not very sensitive to moisture, but intensive wet cleaning can cause the protective film on the edges to become porous, allowing water to penetrate.
My experience shows that the panels should first relax for several days at room temperature without any load. Afterwards, it helps to weigh them down with a flat, firm board (for example, a glass sheet or a heavy wooden board) and store them flat. This often reduces the warping caused by moisture.
If your shelf still isn’t completely flat, you could consider lightly sanding the surface and then treating it with a special sealing spray for particle boards to prevent future moisture damage.
How long have you been drying it so far? And was the shelf board used before it was completely dry?
