Hello everyone, after my recent move, I noticed that the back panel of my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit was damaged during transport. So, I’m wondering: are replacement back panels available for KALLAX units, either directly from IKEA or through third-party suppliers? I’d prefer not to buy an entirely new unit, but just replace the back panel. Has anyone had experience with the availability of spare parts for KALLAX or advice on how to obtain a replacement back panel? Thanks in advance!

Good thing you saved me from false expectations. That’s sometimes how it is with IKEA – no matter how practical and affordable the furniture is, spare parts can always be a bit tricky. But hey, maybe you’ll end up building a cool DIY back panel that looks even more unique than the original! 😉 Good luck!
Just to add a final note: If you decide to cut the back panel yourself, check whether you also have the small metal clips on the back of the KALLAX shelf that are normally used to attach the panel. If not, you can buy these clips at a hardware store or use simple nails. Make sure the back panel sits flush, otherwise the stability of the shelf may be affected.
A small note on material quality: MDF is very good because it is lightweight and sturdy, but it is not well suited for humid conditions. If the shelf will be placed in a more humid area, a thin layer of plywood with a good sealant (e.g., varnish) would be advisable instead. This helps prevent warping or swelling.
Thank you all for the great tips! Yesterday, I ordered MDF boards from the hardware store and will start cutting them today. The advice on fastening and material quality is very helpful in restoring the shelf as close to the original as possible and ensuring it is stable. I will check back with an update once the DIY replacement has been successful. 🙂
