I recently bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and would like to add some painted inserts to certain compartments to give the piece a more personalized and elegant look. However, I’m facing the challenge of choosing the right color that harmonizes well with the white of the shelf and its surroundings.

Specifically, I’m wondering which shades work well with KALLAX white without being too overpowering, yet still provide a distinct accent. Are there any experiences or recommendations regarding RAL or color codes that are particularly suitable for painted inserts?

Additionally, I’m interested in advice on how to maintain the painted surface to ensure it remains durable and resistant over time. Has anyone here painted inserts before or even customized them specifically for KALLAX, and can share some tips?

I look forward to your opinions and recommendations!

It’s great that you want to give your KALLAX a personal touch with painted inserts! 🙂

Regarding colors: I think soft gray tones or a cool light blue work really well with the white KALLAX without being too overpowering. Pastel shades are also always a good choice if you prefer something less bold.

A little tip: RAL colors 7035 (light gray) or 9010 (pure white, if you want a different shade of white) are very popular.

Care: It’s best to clean painted surfaces with a slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaning agents to keep the paint looking good.

Give it a try, it’s a lot of fun! If you have any questions, just ask :-)

RAL 7016 (Anthracite) is a safe choice. It goes well with the white background and provides contrast. Care with mild dish soap and a soft cloth.

Regarding color selection for painted inserts in the KALLAX system, I recommend the following approach:

1. Color harmony: White KALLAX creates a calm overall impression when combined with neutral and muted colors. Gray tones (RAL 7035, 7044) as well as subtle beige or pastel shades are visually unobtrusive.

2. Accent colors: For highlights, dark colors like anthracite (RAL 7016) or blue (RAL 5014) work well, as they are not too bright but clearly distinguishable.

3. Paint quality: Use high-quality acrylic paints specifically designed for furniture to ensure resistance to scratches and moisture.

4. Care instructions: Use a mild cleaning agent, preferably solvent-free, and apply it with a soft, lint-free cloth.

In general, test samples are recommended to evaluate how the color appears in the room and on the surface.

These recommendations are based on current material tests and practical experience from the furniture industry.

Hey, great idea with the painted inserts! 🙂

I have a small suggestion too: If you want it a bit more lively, a bright turquoise or a sunny yellow would be really cool. They add some energy without overpowering the white of the KALLAX. Quite stylish and fresh!

I agree with that, but sometimes color is just meant to be fun 😉

For cleaning – gently with a microfiber cloth. Avoid rough sponges as they will only cause scratches.

Good luck with the painting!

Brief and to the point: RAL 9010 is a perfect match for KALLAX if you want to keep the white tone. For accents, either RAL 7016 or RAL 5024. Paint coating: acrylic paint, 2 layers, sanded between coats. Maintenance: wipe with a damp cloth, no harsh cleaners.
