Hello everyone, I recently bought a Kallax shelf from Ikea to better organize my apartment. However, I have a problem with the humidity in my apartment, which often rises above 70% in spring and summer. I am wondering what the best way is to protect my Kallax from the resulting moisture. I am especially interested in whether there are specific treatment methods for the wood or practical measures I can take to preserve both the material and the stability in the long term. I would appreciate any tips!
The Kallax is made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which is quite resistant to moisture. However, you should avoid allowing water to come into direct contact with the surface. A tip: do not store damp items directly in the compartments and ventilate regularly to prevent mold growth.
I believe that simply recommending regular ventilation falls short in this case. A constant humidity level of 70% is not only a strain on the furniture but also affects indoor air quality. The question is whether a dehumidifier or at least a hygrometer would be useful to better monitor the conditions. What’s the benefit of protecting the Kallax if the humidity remains problematic?
From my own experience, I can say that a combination of humidity control and treatment of the wood surfaces is the best approach. Perhaps even a water-repellent finish for the visible surfaces?

For protective treatment: I would avoid using a water-repellent sealant since the melamine surface of the Kallax is already quite durable. It is more important to place the furniture properly – never directly against damp walls or in corners without air circulation.
Regarding moisture, I recommend regular airing (shock ventilation) and, if necessary, small dehumidifiers as a natural supplement.
I would avoid that because painting the Kallax can quickly make it look unattractive or cause damage, especially if the surface remains glossy.

Also: A dehumidifier, if the budget allows, can work wonders! 🙂 I think it’s great to properly protect furniture, as you want the quality to last a long time!
