ᐅ KALLAX after moving – extra screws left over, but what is missing?

Hello everyone,

I recently moved, and while rebuilding my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, I noticed that there were some screws left over after assembly. My question is: where could these screws be missing from, or which part might I have overlooked or assembled incorrectly?

I have carefully checked all the instructions and assembly guides multiple times, but the extra screws confuse me. The KALLAX is relatively simple in design, but I wonder if, for example, the back panel might not be fully secured, or if certain side panels require screws that I didn’t use.

Are there any common experiences regarding where screws are typically left over with this shelving unit, or common mistakes made when rebuilding it after a move?

I would appreciate clear advice and perhaps a breakdown of which screws are intended for which parts, so I can ensure the unit is assembled securely and stably. Thank you!

Does anyone perhaps have an overview of which screws are used for which purpose?

If you still have the original installation manual, it usually lists the screws by type with numbers.

Otherwise:
- Large wood screws are for side panels and frames
- Small screws are mostly for shelves
- Nails are for the back panel

It's best to compare the screws by size and head type with the manual. If you have some remaining screws that are relatively thick and short, they are probably not missing; those are often for optional parts.

In short: leftover screws are normal. The back panel is nailed, not screwed. Shelves require screws, some of which you might not use. No cause for concern.

IKEA often provides exploded diagrams with numbers for all parts.

Exactly, that is the best approach. The exploded view shows how many screws are intended for each component. If that doesn’t help, it is usually an excess of certain screws.
