Hello,

I’m new to this forum, and I’m hoping someone can help me. Thank you in advance.

In the picture, you can see the patio door, and above it, there are bricks used as cladding. Shouldn’t there be a lintel installed here for support?

Best regards,
Thomas
Brick facade with glass sliding door, ivy-planted containers on both sides, paved forecourt.

Yes!
Almost every brick-clad house is built that way. The mortar holds it in place. The house isn’t made entirely of bricks; they are just a facing layer.
More photos won’t change that. Just take a walk and look at other houses.

Exactly.
Facing bricks are used. Is it really safe if the bricks are just laid like that?

It has been safe for a hundred years. Nothing is going to fall off.

Hello,

I have now received information that a masonry lintel can only be built without additional reinforcement up to a length of 1.26 m (4.1 ft). The patio door is about 1.70 m (5.6 ft) wide. Therefore, some reinforcement should have been installed. However, I cannot see any. What is your opinion?

The house is quite old. Everything is fine and will remain fine – just like in other houses.

Aside from that: Where does that information come from?

How is the lintel actually constructed?
- Without any measures?
- With joint reinforcement?
- Suspended precast lintel?
- Bearing brackets?

As long as you don’t have any detailed plans, you will never find out how it was built without opening up the structure. But in the end, that might not matter.

What is your actual concern? Have you also checked if the window was installed correctly and how the sealing was done? I find that much more interesting based on the photo.
