Hello everyone,

we have purchased a house built in 1962 with an extension from 1992. In the extension, the exterior walls are lined on the inside with an insulated wallpaper. It seems to be a manufactured product: a textured wallpaper with a 1cm (0.4 inch) soft, white insulation layer. We want a smooth interior wall. Removing the insulated wallpaper is difficult and leaves adhesive residues (which were applied back then with a fine toothed spatula). Do we risk mold if we simply screw or glue drywall panels over the wallpaper?

Thanks for any advice!
Good luck

You will curse, cry, and groan, but do yourself a favor and do it right the first time. A "layered construction method" will always come back to haunt you—unless you give up even more space and build a proper, full drywall partition in front of it (which you can then also use as a service cavity for new electrical installations). I have experience with shoddy work in old houses and, looking back years later, I curse every penny saved and every minute cut short.

Even smoother than wallpaper? Are you looking for paint or tiles?

It currently has textured wallpaper, and we would prefer it smooth, that is, plastered and painted. I think you are right, and I will remove it.
