ᐅ Is a solar panel system still worth it? How many years does it typically take to start seeing benefits?

Hans123-128 Jan 2014 14:59Hello,
even though renewable energy is mainly about the environment, as a homeowner you also have to consider the costs. A solar system usually pays off only after many years. I am already over 50. Are the initial costs generally much higher? The political situation should not be ignored either when it comes to subsidies for solar systems. Who knows how things might change there. What do you advise? Should we have a solar system installed?
Regards

The size of the solar system always matters. If you install a small one for your own use, mainly for hot water and a bit of electricity, the costs remain manageable. However, for people looking to make a profit, it has become more difficult.
You can also source solar modules directly from China, but you still need to pay customs duties and taxes, though there is still a significant cost advantage.

Hans123-130 Jan 2014 10:04Hello Paule,
When making such a purchase, you really have to think twice before committing to high costs. Due to my age, I don’t have anyone who would want the house later on. So it would end up being sold. But then the solar panels would also be outdated. I think I need to carefully reconsider everything. Obviously, electricity is expensive right now and will become even more costly due to surcharges. However, the costs are still manageable.
Best regards
Hans

Hi Hans123, as I said, it’s all a matter of personal preference. You can definitely afford something small that you then use for hot water heating and, for example, garden lighting. There are even small ready-made systems available that don’t require you to hire a company.
I also think it’s great to have a solar lamp like that in the garden. Abroad, I have also seen solar panels used for street lighting, where a battery is included to power the street lamp in the evening.
For private individuals, it is clear that you first need to calculate whether it is worthwhile.
