Hello everyone,

In our new house, we are now trying to decide whether the non-load-bearing interior walls should be built from solid masonry or made with gypsum boards. Our main concern is better sound insulation. We are already aware of the other pros and cons (like hanging pictures, etc.). This is especially important in wet areas such as the guest toilet and the bathroom. Since both rooms adjoin the living room or bedroom, you don’t want every visit to the toilet to be easily heard.

Thank you very much in advance for your replies!

Hi,

for this reason, we had all the interior walls built with calcium silicate/sand-lime bricks. Do you have underfloor heating? If so, be careful where you place the manifold units for it. The wall is then very thin at that point!

Every material has its advantages and disadvantages, and you can’t just hammer a nail easily into calcium silicate brick either.

Gypsum boards provide excellent sound insulation—contrary to their reputation, which I don’t understand. A Poroton block wall also meets sound insulation requirements:

Sound Insulation:

Single-layer exterior walls made of lightweight bricks with lightweight mortar, 30 cm (12 inches) or 36.5 cm (14.4 inches) thick and plastered on both sides, usually meet the requirements of DIN 4109 “Protection against external noise.”

The sound insulation requirements for partition walls in DIN 4109 are easily fulfilled by walls made from bricks with bulk densities up to 2.4 kg/dm³ (150 lb/ft³).
