Hi. I’m planning to build a “self-supporting” bed frame with drawers on casters. The Mandal frame seems suitable because the drawers are guided within the frame and it looks great, especially in pine. I know the bed doesn’t have any spring support and that it is no longer offered by Ikea. I plan to get a high pocket spring mattress.
Questions:
Will the frame hold up if I screw solid casters with brakes at the corner points and in the middle? Five casters total. Possibly even two more in the middle along the long side on the outside?
Since I’m not too concerned whether it’s 140 or 160 cm (55 or 63 inches) wide, is the 160 cm option riskier in terms of stability?
Is anyone in the greater Berlin area looking to get rid of their pine Mandal bed?
Thank you ☺

IKEA-Experte9 Aug 2016 20:39MANDAL is made of birch. With a sufficient number of casters and support for both boards at the corners, I wouldn’t have any concerns. If you notice some give under load, you just need to reinforce it.
