Hello everyone,

I have had an IKEA Malm wooden nightstand (actually chipboard with a laminate surface) in my bedroom for some time. Unfortunately, stains have appeared on it that I cannot remove properly. The stains look as if liquid has soaked in – maybe water or coffee stains, since I often place my cup there in the evening.

I’m wondering how to best remove such stains from the Malm nightstand without damaging the surface. Which household remedies or specialized cleaning products work best? Are there any methods that protect the material and do not damage the laminate surface?

I have already tried cleaning with simple dish soap and a damp cloth, but the stains remain. I also want to avoid the surface becoming dull or rough. Does anyone have experience cleaning this type of nightstand and can offer advice? Thanks in advance!

Hello,

to remove stains from IKEA Malm nightstands, it is recommended to start with gentle cleaning using mild dish soap and a soft cloth, as you have already tried. If the stains are stubborn, isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) can also be effective, as it often removes grease and beverage residues without damaging the laminated surface. Please be sure to test it first on an inconspicuous area!

Important: Do not use abrasive cleaners or corrosive agents, as these can damage the laminate. Also, avoid using excessively wet cloths, since moisture can penetrate the particleboard and cause the surface to swell.

For particularly stubborn stains, a plastic eraser (often called a “Magic Eraser”) can be tried, but only very carefully and gently. Excess moisture and harsh chemicals are almost always harmful when cleaning laminated surfaces, so the rule is: test, treat gently, and dry immediately.

If the stains remain despite all efforts, the last option is to cover the affected area with painter’s tape and re-cover it with a suitable furniture film or new veneer.

Hope this helps.

I am skeptical about isopropanol. Even though it may seem gentle at first, repeated use on film surfaces can cause microscopic damage or discoloration.

In my opinion, it is better to first determine exactly what type of stains are present – water stains on films are actually uncommon; usually, it is dirt or contamination instead. Have the stains really penetrated the surface, or are they only superficial?

If liquid has indeed penetrated the material, it is likely swelling of the particle board, which cannot be cleaned. In that case, sanding or complete replacement is the only solution.

Another point: Please explain how thoroughly you have cleaned the surface so far. Excessive moisture can actually worsen the problem.

Basically, I recommend identifying the cause of the stains clearly before trying various cleaning agents blindly. By the way, acidic cleaners such as vinegar are not recommended for laminated surfaces.

Hey, I know exactly what you mean! 🙂 With the Malm nightstand from IKEA, it usually means: be careful with too much water. What has always helped me a lot is using a well-wrung microfiber cloth combined with mild soap, like pure soap—this is very gentle but still lifts the stain effectively.

If the stain is stubborn, I like to use a few drops of olive oil—yes, it sounds strange, but it also conditions the laminate and makes it a bit more flexible, which makes it harder for the stain to stick 😉 Just don’t overdo it! Afterwards, if needed, wipe down with a dry cloth.

Of course, don’t scrub like crazy but rather gently “stroke” the surface—this keeps it smooth and fresh.

I’m curious if this works for you too. Good luck!
