Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask how you gathered and organized your ideas before and during the house planning process. I’m still quite early in the process but already have piles of magazines lying around. Now I’m wondering how to keep everything orderly and sorted.
Did you mark pages, links, addresses, or photos in the magazines that you liked? Or did you cut out pages, articles, or photos and store them sorted by themes (kitchen, bathroom, fireplace, garden, etc.)? If so, how did you collect them? Boxes, folders?
At the moment, I have no clear plan and am just overwhelmed by the growing stacks of magazines. I’m worried I will soon lose track and won’t be able to find anything I liked again.
Looking forward to tips and experiences :-)

Hello Panama,
At the beginning, I also collected many catalogs and magazines. Then I cut out photos or floor plans and neatly filed everything in a folder. Now our floor plan is finalized, and it’s time to start discussions with construction companies. Many of them wanted to see our ideas, including houses we simply liked the look of. They were all grateful for our collection.
It’s hard to keep all the magazines and so on 🙂
The huge pile annoyed me after a while as well.
Good luck with your search.

I tore it out and set it aside... never looked back because of my photographic memory.
Not everything you like has to be implemented. Too many highlights are not good either. Somehow, the few things you keep fit together.
Still: the best part is the planning, even better is what happens by chance.

Hello,
we also looked through many catalogs and magazines and marked a few floor plans and elevations that we particularly liked. Afterwards, we drew “our” floor plan on a sheet of paper and discussed it in detail. Due to a few “problem areas,” we then reviewed how these were addressed in the floor plans from the catalogs. In the end, we had a floor plan that we cost-calculated with a few nationwide general contractors.
Finally, we met with the local general contractor’s in-house architect. He added some optimizations and details to our floor plan and showed a better way to accommodate the air-to-water heat pump. In the end, he sketched our final floor plan and some elevations freehand.
We are now very happy with this. Some aspects would not have been as well solved without an architect. Therefore, I can only recommend planning with an architect. But good preliminary planning was very helpful and time-saving.
Best regards
Jochen

Doc.Schnaggls10 Oct 2014 09:24Hello,
we kept a few issues of magazines “as a whole” and, as ypg already mentioned, never really looked inside them again.
We scanned individual items such as floor plan ideas, equipment details, or other interesting things, stored them in various themed folders on our PC, and cataloged them in an index file (Excel).
We actually used these files several times until our final planning was completed.
Additionally, in several books we bought on the subject of house building, we marked the pages that interested us with colored sticky tabs, and also created a separate Excel file as an “index” for these.
Regards,
Dirk

For us, besides magazines, the most valuable help was a huge house exhibition park near Frankfurt. I find that many floor plans look good on paper, but actually walking through the different designs offered by house builders and experiencing the various room sizes and layouts firsthand was really the best way to clarify our own preferences. Maybe there is something similar near you?

Ziva
