Hello everyone,

I’m currently considering how practical it actually is to retrofit lighting into the well-known Billy shelves. In many living spaces, these shelves often appear somewhat dark, especially when placed further into the room or fully packed with books. This raises the fundamental question for me:

Is it worth integrating LED strips or other lighting solutions into Billy shelves if the goal is to enhance their appearance and at the same time make it easier to find items? What are the advantages and disadvantages in terms of functionality, energy consumption, effort, and design?

I look forward to hearing about your experiences with retrofitting or whether this might be overkill. Looking forward to your opinions and advice!

Retrofitting lighting into Billy shelves can be quite useful but requires careful planning. There are basically two main aspects to consider: the light source itself and its installation.

Starting with the light source: LEDs are practical because they emit little heat and are very energy-efficient. LED strips with warm white light that can be dimmed are especially recommended. It is important to ensure a sufficiently high color rendering index (CRI above 80) so that the colors of books and decorations retain their natural appearance.

Regarding installation: Many choose adhesive strips attached to the back of the shelves. However, it is important to route cables as discreetly as possible to avoid detracting from the overall look. Avoiding shadows should also be planned for—for example, by positioning the lights under the shelves or along the top edge.

The effort involved should also be considered: properly installing the lighting, hiding power supplies or batteries, and possibly integrating switches can be time-consuming. Some prefer smart solutions with motion sensors or remote controls to significantly increase convenience.

Conclusion: Those who have ample time and some DIY skills will especially appreciate the added value of lighting in darker rooms—improved visibility and a cozier atmosphere. If space or patience is limited, this can often be more easily achieved with external floor lamps.

That’s exactly what I mean! 🙂 Especially when the Billy shelf isn’t next to the window, it often feels like a dark corner in the room. Subtle lighting really creates a nice ambiance without overwhelming the overall look.

I installed LED spotlights that I control wirelessly – basically “shelf lighting at the push of a button.” It makes finding books or decorative items really easy. And hey, when guests come over, it also looks quite stylish! ;-)

Of course, you have to do a bit of DIY, but in my opinion, it’s worth it. After all, Billy is like the foundation with its affordable prices, and with a few small upgrades, it becomes really cool. So: go ahead with the lighting, as long as it’s not too complicated!

Lighting makes sense when the shelf is placed in dark areas. LED strips are easy to install. Make sure to choose energy-efficient models. Having power outlets nearby is important.
