ᐅ How do you properly reinsert Malm drawers into their sliding rails?

zoran56Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing an issue with my IKEA Malm drawers for some time: sometimes they don’t slide smoothly on the runners, they stick or are difficult to pull out. It seems to me that the drawer no longer fits properly into the guide rails, and I suspect that the runners might have slipped out of place or become misaligned.
My specific question is: how can you get Malm drawers running smoothly again on the runners, so they operate quietly and easily? Do you need special tools, should the runners be fixed or adjusted somehow, or maybe the rollers need cleaning or replacement?
Perhaps there is also a trick to properly “hang” the drawer without having to remove it completely with a lot of effort.
If it matters: these are standard Malm dressers with typical runners, not the soft-close version.
I would be very grateful for detailed tips or explanations, including brief descriptions of how this works exactly. Thanks in advance!

Hello zoran56 :-)
I know this problem all too well – those Malm drawers can be quite tricky!
What helps me is the following: remove the drawer completely by pulling it straight out until it comes off the runners. Then carefully inspect the runners – sometimes small crumbs, dust, or even hair can accumulate and interfere with the movement. Just clean them with a damp cloth and wipe the rollers on the drawer side.
Sometimes the plastic gliders get stuck or misaligned. In that case, loosen the screws of the runners slightly, realign everything, and then tighten the screws again. Make sure the runners are perfectly parallel to each other – this is important, otherwise the drawer won’t slide smoothly.
Actually, the drawer is very simply mounted on the runners: you just push it in straight, and it usually snaps in place with a little click. If that doesn’t work, the drawer might be warped or the runners misaligned.
Good luck with your project! 🙂

eine Idee, wie man die Schublade richtig „einhängt“, ohne großen Ausbau

Hello zoran56,
I would like to explain the issue in more detail, as Malm drawers can indeed be tricky if they no longer slide properly on the rails.
First of all: Malm dressers often have drawers with plastic rollers that run on plastic sliding rails. Over time, dirt, slight wear, or deformation can cause problems with the sliding function.
The correct reinstallation requires the following steps:
1. Completely remove the drawer: Pull the drawer out as far as possible until it can be lifted out, then remove it entirely.
2. Inspect the rails and rollers: Check the plastic gliders on the bottom of the drawer and the rails on the dresser side for damage, wear, or deformation.
3. Clean the rails and rollers: Use a grease-free cloth and, if needed, a mild cleaning agent to clean all moving parts. Make sure there are no residues of lubricants left, as these can cause the plastic to stick.
4. Adjust the rails: Gradually loosen the screws, align the rails so they run perfectly parallel, then tighten the screws again. Even slight offsets or angle deviations can cause the drawer to jam.
5. Reinsert the drawer: It is very important to insert the drawer straight into the rails. Often, the rollers on the bottom of the drawer sit on small tabs on the rails that ensure a “click-in” fit. You should insert the drawer at a slight angle so the rollers slide correctly into the rails, then push it straight back.
6. Check if the drawer slides smoothly or still jams. If it jams, repeat the rail adjustment.
One more tip: Sometimes the plastic rollers are worn. In that case, you can even buy replacements (some suppliers offer spare parts), or check if the rollers still spin freely.
I can only confirm this: if the rails are not exactly parallel, there will be jams.
A final question for you: Have you noticed whether the rails on the dresser side are securely screwed in, or if screws are missing? Sometimes, over time, these can loosen and the rails warp slightly.
I hope this helps you.
