Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Ikea Hemnes furniture with wood surfaces and now I am wondering about the best way to care for them to keep them looking good for as long as possible without losing their shine or quality. I am especially interested in which cleaning products are suitable, whether special oils or waxes should be used, and how often the furniture should generally be treated. I would also like to know what should definitely be avoided to prevent any damage to the surface, as I have heard that some care products can harm the wood.

Perhaps someone has experience with the HEMNES series or with caring for lacquered or oiled wood surfaces from Ikea in general. I look forward to your tips and advice!

Hello paupe,

for daily cleaning, it is best to use a damp, slightly wrung-out cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or solvents. A special furniture oil or wax is not necessary for HEMNES, as the surface is lacquered.

Hello,

I’d like to add a brief care guide for Ikea HEMNES furniture:

- Cleaning: Use only a mild soap solution (e.g., a drop of dish soap in warm water) and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners that can damage the surface.
- Drying: Always wipe the surface immediately after cleaning with a dry cotton cloth to prevent moisture damage.
- Maintenance: Since HEMNES is lacquered, oil or wax treatments are not necessary and can even cause stains.
- Frequency: Weekly wiping with a dry or slightly damp cloth is usually sufficient.
- Avoid: Do not use abrasive cleaners or steel wool, as these will scratch the surface.

In summary, HEMNES furniture is easy to maintain when using gentle cleaning methods and avoiding oily products. This helps protect the lacquer from damage over time.

If you’re uncertain, test cleaning or care products first on an inconspicuous area.

Thank you for the tip! That’s very helpful because I actually read somewhere that wax can be used to preserve the wood appearance – so that seems contradictory.

Can you tell me if there are differences between various HEMNES pieces? Some have untreated or only oiled surfaces. What is the best way to identify this, and does it significantly change the maintenance routine? It would also be interesting to know if the furniture near heat sources like radiators needs special care to prevent warping or drying out.

Yes, that’s an important point: Most HEMNES furniture pieces have a painted finish that creates a protective layer. This means that maintenance oils or waxes are not only unnecessary but can actually be counterproductive, as they may damage the paint layer or leave stains.

You can usually identify the surface type from the material label or the product description. Painted surfaces often appear slightly glossy and smooth, while oiled or waxed surfaces have a slightly matte and warmer feel. For untreated wood, using oil or wax is important to protect and care for the wood.

Near heating sources, you should generally ensure the air does not become too dry—this applies to all wooden furniture. Regular ventilation and avoiding moisture extremes help prevent cracks and warping.

Hello everyone!

I love my HEMNES furniture and can only confirm how important proper care is 🙂
What also helps a lot: simply dust the furniture occasionally with a microfiber cloth and avoid letting moisture sit on the surface for extended periods.

One more tip: if you ever have a stain that you can’t remove with water, try gently using a bit of solvent (e.g., isopropanol) on a cloth, but always test it first on a hidden spot.

Enjoy taking care of your furniture—your pieces will thank you!
