Hello everyone,

I unfortunately damaged some edges on my BILLY shelf, with parts broken or torn. The issues mainly appear on the corners and edges of the shelves, probably due to prolonged use or during transport. My specific question is: What is the best way to repair these broken edges on a BILLY shelf to maintain stability and make the edges as invisible or at least visually acceptable as possible? I have already read a bit about wood filler, edge repair kits for furniture, and reglueing wood fibers, but I would like to know which method has proven effective, if there are certain products that work well with particleboard and veneer, and how to proceed so that the repair is not visible or does not break again shortly after. I appreciate your tips and experiences!

The problem is often that the chipboard edge is brittle. I recommend:

1. Removing loose parts
2. Cleaning the edges thoroughly
3. Using wood glue to reattach parts
4. Filling chipped areas with wood filler or furniture repair wax

You can reapply the foil using double-sided tape and paper edging.

Hello Nuron,

Regarding your concern: Repairing broken edges on BILLY shelves first requires assessing how deep the damage is. BILLY shelves are usually made of particleboard with a veneer foil, which can quickly fray further when broken.

My advice: If the damaged area is still relatively small, you can repair it using a fine wood filler (available at hardware stores). Here’s how:

- First, make sure the surface is clean and dust-free.
- Apply the filler thinly and carefully reshape the edge.
- After it dries, be sure to sand it down and then touch up with matching paint or a marker to maintain the appearance.

If the edge is missing over a larger area, it makes sense to restore stability using wood glue and possibly a small, thin wooden strip. Afterwards, smooth out any unevenness with filler.

It is also important that, if needed, you work carefully with the appropriate adhesive or narrow masking tape along the edges of the veneer layer to prevent further peeling.

If you like, I can gladly recommend some product names and brands. 🙂

That’s exactly the point. One should not apply wood filler blindly without analyzing the cause. With particleboard, moisture can worsen the damage.

I would also consider how much load the shelf is carrying. If an edge is cracked but the shelf isn’t supporting weight, it may be just a cosmetic issue. Otherwise, reinforcement should be considered, for example with a glued joint and possibly narrow strips along the inner edge.

That’s true, but such fillers often don’t adhere well to the plastic laminate. If the laminate is damaged, it’s better to renew or cover it before filling, otherwise it will crack again quickly.

Has anyone had experience with special adhesive films or edge banding? That might provide a more durable solution here.
