Hello everyone,

Lately, I have been experiencing issues with my Malm drawers warping over time, meaning they no longer close properly or appear slightly twisted. My question is: How can I effectively prevent warping in Malm drawers? I am especially interested in specific measures and tips that both reduce stress on the materials and increase long-term stability.

I use the drawers in a normal household under average conditions (no extreme humidity or temperature fluctuations), and I suspect that factors such as uneven load distribution or storage methods might play a role.

I would be very grateful for any helpful advice, as I imagine this discussion could reveal many possibilities I have not yet considered.

To prevent deformation of Malm drawers, I recommend regularly checking the load. Do not overload the drawers – their maximum load capacity is usually between 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs). Make sure to distribute heavy items as evenly as possible.

Secondly, the drawers are made of particleboard or similar materials that are sensitive to moisture. Therefore, avoid prolonged exposure to high humidity, as the material can swell or shrink. An ideal humidity level is between 40-60%.

In addition, the drawer slides should remain clean and slide smoothly to prevent any additional stress that could cause warping. Occasional cleaning and lubrication of the tracks can help prevent this.

Finally, proper installation is essential. Check that the drawers are installed level, as an uneven installation can promote warping.

Hello german,

I’m familiar with the issue with Malm drawers. They are affordable and visually appealing, but can indeed be prone to warping if used improperly or exposed to unfavorable environmental conditions. Here are a few tips based on my experience that might help:

First, consider the placement: If the furniture is positioned near a heater or above a window exposed to direct sunlight, the wood or plastic material can warp. Try to ensure a more consistent surrounding environment.

Then, the humidity: As TEKIN already mentioned, this is crucial. If you have fluctuating humidity levels, using a dehumidifier or ensuring good ventilation might help.

Another important point is the weight inside the drawers. From my experience, overloading them, especially with heavy items unevenly distributed towards the front, can cause the drawers to warp.

If you are somewhat handy, you can even add extra reinforcement using thin wooden strips on the inside of the drawers to increase their stability.

In general, I also recommend occasionally checking and tightening the screws of the frame and the drawer slides. Loose screws can also contribute to warping.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions about implementation, just ask. 🙂

Do not overload drawers; this is the most important point.

Avoid high humidity.

Regularly check and lubricate hinges and tracks.

Exactly, the weight and its distribution are often underestimated. Uneven loading, especially at the lower or front edges, significantly increases the mechanical stress on the side panels.

I completely agree. Excess weight causes permanent deformation because the material yields under long-term pressure.

One more tip from me: if the surface underneath is not level, this can also put stress on the furniture and cause it to become misaligned. A spirit level helps check this, and if necessary, you can compensate with furniture pads or shims.

Hey german,

First of all: I understand how annoying crooked Malm drawers can be! 🙂

My secret tip is: care and a little attention to detail. If you handle the drawers gently and evenly, they will last longer. A bit of lubricant on the runners is your friend – that makes everything run smoothly.

Also, recently I added small pieces of felt or foam rubber inside as dampers to avoid light pressure marks. It also prevents creaking noises.

And yes, only load them lightly – these drawers aren’t made for 100 kilograms (220 pounds), trust me. 😉

If you also pay a bit of attention to temperature and humidity, you’re on the safe side. You can really get more out of the simple Malm without having to invest in more expensive furniture right away.

As I said: a little care, avoiding overloading, and smooth sliding take away a lot of stress.
