LISTRAHello everyone,
I recently got a Billy bookcase and am using it for a large collection of heavy books and some technical equipment. Unfortunately, Iâve noticed that the shelves start to sag under heavier loads, which is not ideal in the long run. My questions are: How can I prevent the BILLY shelves from sagging when heavily loaded? Are there proven methods to increase stability without having to replace the entire unit? Iâm open to tips for avoiding sagging, such as reinforcements, special load arrangements, or additional components.
Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

are you reinforcing the individual shelves with additional wooden battensThatâs a good approach. Additionally, I would make sure to distribute the load as evenly as possible: instead of packing single shelves with very heavy items, itâs better to spread them across several levels.
Alternatively, you can use metal shelf brackets from a hardware store that are attached to the back panel, which stabilizes the entire shelving unit. Wooden battens under the shelves make sense but should be precisely fitted to avoid wobbling or altering the height.
Hello,
I understand that sagging shelves can be frustrating, especially under heavy loads. In addition to the reinforcements mentioned, another suggestion is to secure the shelves not only through the dowel holes on the sides but also with metal brackets fixed underneath at the front edge. These brackets increase load capacity and reduce bending.
This approach is particularly helpful if the shelves are made of particleboard, as is common with BILLY. Depending on the weight of the books, it may also be worth considering replacing the shelves with stronger materials, such as MDF boards with higher stability.
Additionally, you should check whether the unit is perfectly vertical, since even slight tilting can unnecessarily increase the load on individual shelves.

Are there established methods to improve stability without having to buy an entirely different shelving unit?I completely understand how frustrating that can be. I had the same experience with my BILLY shelves, especially when youâre aiming for a more robust solution.
What helped me a lot was cutting a thin plywood sheet from the hardware store exactly to the shelfâs dimensions and placing it across the full width underneath each shelf board. This supports the weight and adds extra stiffness. It might not be the most elegant solution, but itâs an inexpensive and quick fix.
Also, try to place heavier items as close as possible to the shelving unitâs sides. The central load is usually the cause of sagging. Keep at it, with a few tricks the shelf will last longer 🙂

If you make yourself a few simple helpers like that, you can significantly reduce sagging. One more tip: make sure the shelf unit is not only standing straight but is also properly fixed to the wall. Securing the back panel with screws instead of just gluing it makes a big difference in stability.
Good luck, and donât let sagging bring you down! 🙂
