Hello everyone,

I have been working from home for a while now and have set up my Ikea Hemnes desk for this purpose. However, I’ve noticed that it is not yet fully adapted to my home office needs in some areas.

I’m mainly looking for practical tips and smart solutions on how to better organize and optimize the Hemnes desk to work more efficiently and ergonomically.

I’m particularly interested in ideas for improved cable management, optimizing storage space, and options to adjust the desk height or legroom without having to replace the desk completely.

Does anyone have experience using the Hemnes desk in a home office setting and can offer specific recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

Hello Minru5,

to set up your Hemnes desk optimally for working from home, there are several aspects you should consider. I’ll try to organize this clearly so you have concrete steps to follow.

- Cable management:
The main challenge with the Hemnes desk is that it has no built-in cable channels or holes. Therefore, it’s advisable to install external cable holders or clips underneath. PVC cable ducts from hardware stores can be easily mounted under the desk to gather and hide cables. Make sure the mounting materials do not damage the surface.

- Storage & organization:
The existing drawers are quite deep, but you can organize them with insert trays or storage boxes to keep writing utensils and documents neat. Hanging files that can be placed inside a drawer are also useful.

- Ergonomics / desk height:
Since the Hemnes has fixed legs, you can experiment with height-adjustable desk risers or pads if the height is not ideal for you. Alternatively, ergonomic footrests can improve comfort. Regarding legroom, you might check if loosening the lower crossbar is possible to create more space for your legs, but be cautious as this can affect stability.

- Additional tips:
Depending on how much surface area you need, you can place small mobile pedestals next to the desk or attach swivel shelves. It’s also worth visually separating your workspace, for example with a small shelf or room divider, if you want to improve concentration.

One last question: What devices do you use at the Hemnes desk (monitor, laptop, peripherals)? This information helps to assess cable management and the storage needed.

I hope this information helps you!

That’s an important point. Additionally, I recommend considering the correct seat height when adjusting the table height and, if necessary, choosing an ergonomically designed office chair.

For cable management, silicone cable clips are useful because they can be removed without leaving residue and are flexible. They can be easily attached to the wooden surfaces of the Hemnes without major drilling.

To keep drawers organized, modular plastic inserts that fit the exact dimensions are a good choice and help to clearly separate work materials.

Regarding legroom: The crossbar is important for stability. Modifying it is only advisable if the table’s structural support is compensated for with an alternative solution.

I wish you good luck with the redesign!

Hello Minru5,

I also use a Hemnes desk and can share some personal recommendations:

- Use small plastic containers inside the drawers to separate pens, cables, and small items. This helps avoid the usual clutter.

- For cable management, I use flexible spiral sleeves to bundle the cables together. Additionally, I have attached a small power strip with USB ports on one side of the desk.

- To increase legroom, I moved the desk about one centimeter (0.4 inches) forward from the wall so my legs don’t hit the bottom edge of the drawers.

- For ergonomic working, I use a laptop stand combined with an external keyboard. This way, I can adjust the screen height optimally.

If you provide more details about your setup, I’d be happy to offer further help.
