Hello everyone, I’m facing the challenge of installing my Billy shelves in a rental apartment without drilling or otherwise damaging the walls. This is important to me because I want to avoid problems with the landlord when I move out. I’ve heard of various methods, such as screw systems without drilling, tension rods between floor and ceiling, or special adhesive strips, but I’m unsure how stable these solutions really are, especially when the shelves are fully loaded.

My question is: How can I secure Billy shelves without drilling so that they remain as stable as possible without damaging the wall? Are there any proven solutions or products you can recommend? I would appreciate tips based on personal experience, ideally with information about how much weight the shelves can support without drilling.

Using tension rods between floor and ceiling is a proven method to securely mount Billy-style shelves without drilling.

Important: The tension rods must be precisely adjusted to the room dimensions, meaning the ceiling height minus the floor thickness. Most IKEA versions are designed for standard ceiling heights; for non-standard measurements, alternative suppliers or custom-made tension rods may be advisable.

Installation is relatively simple and does not require special tools, just a spirit level and, if needed, a tape measure to take measurements. The shelf is attached to the rods, usually with clamp brackets or support angles screwed onto the back of the shelf. The stability is significantly better than adhesive-only solutions, and the rods create enough pressure to prevent slipping.

Clamp brackets that pinch between the shelf back panel and the tension rods have proven to be effective for securing the shelf. They are often included in tension rod sets.

Additionally, using a non-slip pad under the bottom shelf support helps prevent slipping on the floor.

In addition to tension rod-based mounting, I can point out that there are alternative attachment options using so-called clamping profiles.

These profiles surround the shelf frame and press it against the wall without the need for drilling. However, this only works reliably on smooth and stable wall surfaces. For textured wallpaper or delicate wallcoverings, this can cause issues.

Regarding load capacity, the general rule is that the higher the expected load, the more secure the fixation needs to be. Tension rods are the most robust no-drill option.

Alternatively, there are also special lever tension systems that can be quickly adjusted and installed without any tools, but these are less common and typically cost a bit more.

Exactly – this is a very important point that is often underestimated.
