Good morning everyone, I am planning to install IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets in my old apartment and am looking for recommendations on how to mount them as securely and stably as possible despite often uneven walls and partly unstable floors. I am especially interested in what measures I should take if the walls are not perfectly straight to still ensure a strong and durable installation. Are there any special mounting materials, leveling techniques, or reinforcements that have proven effective in older buildings? I look forward to your experiences and tips, including any common mistakes to avoid.

Hey, that’s a really good question! Especially in older buildings, where the walls often have their own unique shapes, it’s worth spending some time on accurate fitting before assembly. Tip 1: Use adjustable feet like the IKEA Metod system, which help to smoothly even out floor height differences. Always work carefully with a spirit level – being perfectly level is crucial in the end.

Tip 2: If the wall is uneven, you can compensate with spacers or small wooden battens placed behind the mounting rails. This way, the cabinet will sit securely and won’t wobble. Also: Always use good-quality anchors at critical points, because drywall or old masonry can otherwise struggle to hold properly 😉.

To take the topic a bit more technical, in addition to the adjustable feet, the following aspects should also be considered:

- The wall structure in older buildings is often uneven and consists of different materials (plaster, brick, wood). For choosing anchors, I recommend heavy-duty or metal anchors, as these significantly increase load capacity and prevent stronger pull-out forces.

- Before installing the Metod wall cabinets, make sure the surrounding IKEA hanging rails are securely and evenly mounted. These rails should be adjusted with spacers if the wall is uneven.

- For floors with a slight slope, adjustable feet are essential to properly distribute the load and keep the cabinets level.

- For additional stability, tension braces or metal brackets can be attached to the back of the base cabinets to prevent lateral movement.

- Finally, a recommendation: connect all cabinets using connectors to ensure the entire structure stays stable and does not come apart.

If you have specific measurements or photos of your wall or floor conditions, I can provide more detailed suggestions.

Before installing the Metod upper cabinets, it is essential to check that the surrounding mounting rails of the IKEA series are securely and evenly installed.

This is an important point that I would like to examine more critically. It is often assumed that the supplied rails are always 100% load-bearing, but especially with older walls, this assumption should be questioned. It is not enough just to screw the rails tightly – it is also crucial whether the wall structure at that location provides sufficient stability.

Furthermore, how is it ensured that the load is distributed evenly without creating weak points? I believe it makes sense to test the wall’s load capacity in advance, for example with a drill hole test, and if necessary, to reinforce it additionally (e.g., with wooden battens behind the wall). Only then can lasting stability be guaranteed.

My suggestion for consideration: It’s not just about the rail, but the entire system of wall plus fasteners. Therefore, one should not rely solely on IKEA-specific materials but also consider custom solutions if needed.

That’s correct. For older buildings, it is always necessary to check the load-bearing capacity.

In addition, the cabinets should be connected to each other using the IKEA connectors. This creates a box that won’t twist.

Adjustable feet are also essential to compensate for uneven floors.

As an addition: If the floor is really uneven, installing a substructure made of OSB panels beforehand can help. Place this level on the floor, align it, and then position the Metod base cabinets on top. This prevents individual legs from being heavily loaded and one side of the cabinet from sinking.

For wall mounting: Older walls often have cavities and varying material thicknesses. Therefore, it is recommended to use expansion anchors with a large contact surface or even chemical anchors, if the masonry permits.

Another safety measure: After assembly, secure the cabinets to the side walls, if available. This significantly increases stability.

In general, when working with older buildings, one should not follow instructions rigidly but rather respond flexibly to the individual conditions.
