I recently bought a Malm nightstand from Ikea, but I noticed that the piece of furniture feels quite wobbly under load, especially when opening a drawer or when the table is bumped. My question is: What specific methods or techniques can be used to stabilize a Malm nightstand and reduce the wobbling? I am looking for solutions that provide a long-lasting effect and are relatively easy to implement, preferably with advice on materials or tools I might need for this.

The challenge with furniture like the Malm nightstand often lies in its construction from particleboard and its simple design. The wobbling usually occurs because the screw connections loosen over time or are not seated properly.

I recommend first completely loosening all screws and then reassembling the joints with a little wood glue before tightening them again. This can create a stronger bond between the parts.

Additionally, adding a few extra metal corner braces to the inside of the back panels provides fairly good additional stability. However, it’s important to remember that overall stability mainly depends on proper assembly. Did you assemble the nightstand yourself? If not, a thorough check of all screw connections would be the first step.

To stabilize a Malm nightstand, a combination of mechanical reinforcement and material support is recommended.

First, I suggest reinforcing the back panel with additional plywood or thin multiplex boards. These panels should be glued over the entire surface with wood glue and fastened with evenly spaced screws to increase the overall stiffness of the structure.

Second, it is helpful to check all screw connections and, if necessary, treat them with screw-locking adhesive to prevent loosening.

That’s correct. In addition, I recommend using felt pads or self-adhesive rubber bumpers under the table legs to compensate for minor floor unevenness and prevent wobbling.

Material list:
- Plywood sheet 3–5 mm (0.1–0.2 inches)
- Wood glue
- Corner braces / corner brackets
- Screw-locking adhesive
- Rubber bumpers

Tools:
- Cordless drill
- Screwdriver
- Saw (if needed)

Tighten the screws. Attach angle brackets. Place felt pads underneath.

I can understand how frustrating it is when the bedside table wobbles and feels unstable.

I used the method with brackets and additional back panel reinforcement on my Malm bedside table. It also gives you more confidence in everyday use, knowing that the piece of furniture is stable.

A useful tip can also be to avoid overloading the bedside table and to make sure the legs are standing on a level floor – this often makes a big difference.

How stable is your floor? Could the wobbling be caused by an uneven surface?
