Hello everyone,
I recently tried to assemble the Ikea Malm drawers myself, which turned out to be quite challenging. Installing and aligning the drawer runners and getting the drawers onto the rails took me a lot of time and effort. My question for you: What tips or tricks do you know to make assembling Malm drawers easier and less frustrating? Are there any tools, working techniques, or specific sequences that noticeably simplify the process? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I have to say, I’ve assembled the Malm drawers many times, and one thing I’ve learned is: just enjoy the process! 🙂

I think a third pair of hands or a support clamp could be helpful here.

Exactly! Sometimes I use a clamp or a small thick board to hold the drawer at the right height. This makes hanging it much easier and you don’t need superhuman strength.

Good lighting also really helps – it makes the runners easier to see and allows for more precise alignment. Another tip I’ve discovered: if you keep the drawer slides really clean, removing dust and wood debris, everything runs more smoothly.

A little tip on the side: if you get frustrated, just remember that in the end it will be a beautiful piece of furniture – and that makes it even more rewarding 🙂

I think Malm drawers are intentionally designed to make you feel confirmed in why you’d rather buy pre-assembled furniture when putting them together 😉

Jokes aside, I find the discussion here interesting, but at the same time, I wonder whether it really has to be this difficult, or if Ikea might be systematically overwhelming the self-assembly customer?

Avoid screws that split the material. For softwood, use a pilot drill bit (1–2 mm) – this makes assembly much easier.

Exactly, and that’s often missing in the instructions, right? Also, that you shouldn’t force anything. I therefore advocate for a bit more care in Ikea’s design – or else you become dependent on hacks and tips just to get through it.

It would be interesting to know how often these problems occur for people who follow the instructions exactly. Are there any experiences or statistics on this? (No offense meant, just curious).
