Hello everyone,

I have recently looked into the safety of Ikea Hemnes furniture in detail, as I plan to use it in our children’s room. The main question I have is: How can Ikea Hemnes furniture be made safe for children, especially regarding tip-over risks, injury hazards from edges, and secure storage of small parts?

I am particularly interested in which measures are most effective to ensure the furniture is stable once assembled and what additional safety precautions are advisable to prevent accidents involving children. Are there any proven methods or product accessories that users would recommend? I look forward to practical tips and experiences related to this brand and safety considerations for young children.

Thank you in advance!

It also makes sense to regularly check that the anchors are still secure.

Absolutely right! I always add a bit of humor and call it my "furniture check round." Together with the kids, it becomes a regular big adventure where everyone gets to check if everything is still firmly in place.

In addition, with the Hemnes dressers, I’ve found that not only should they be firmly anchored to the wall, but for larger models, I sometimes place a small wedge under the furniture to even out slightly uneven floors. If the floor wobbles, the furniture wobbles too, which is definitely not acceptable with children.

Jokes aside, safety is a fundamental requirement. So: secure, protect, inspect – and don’t forget that this also gives the kids a safe retreat.

Brief and to the point:

- Always secure furniture to the wall with anti-tip brackets.
- Install edge protection on drawers and corners.
- Fit drawers with child safety locks.
- Check the flooring for unevenness and level the furniture if necessary.

That’s it—then Hemnes furniture is safe for children.

Anchor furniture securely to the wall, as children may climb on it while playing.

Ianlau raises a very important safety issue here. For anyone wanting to childproof Hemnes furniture, here is a simple step-by-step guide for secure wall attachment:

1. Prepare materials: Ikea anti-tip kit or a sturdy retrofit set with metal brackets
2. Choose location: Ideally a solid wall – drywall requires special anchors
3. Installation: Position the furniture, mark drilling points on the wall
4. Drill holes, insert anchors, and screw the furniture to the wall
5. Stability check: Gently push the furniture and test the anti-tip attachment

A common mistake is leaving the anchor too loose or drilling only into the wall paneling. This greatly reduces safety. It is also recommended to check all screws every six months after installation.

The basic rule is: securely fastened furniture will not tip over. This eliminates the greatest accident risk for children with Hemnes furniture.
