Hello everyone,

I am planning to move some IKEA Malm furniture soon and am looking for the best methods to secure these pieces safely for transport. Especially with larger dressers or desks from the Malm series, movable drawers and loose parts can quickly cause problems if they shift or get damaged during transit.

I am particularly interested in practical tips on how to effectively fix the drawers in place, whether it is worth using special padding materials, and how to prepare the furniture so it arrives at the destination without damage. Perhaps there are also experiences with specific securing techniques to keep in mind when loading the vehicle.

Can you help me with this? What preparations do you make with Malm furniture to avoid damage during transport?

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Hello Liatan,

First of all, it’s a good approach that you are specifically asking about securing options for MALM furniture. This series is known for its clean lines, but the drawers can actually be a problem if they are not properly secured.

1. Securing drawers: I recommend completely removing all drawers and wrapping them individually in bubble wrap. Alternatively, sturdy stretch film can be used to seal the drawers. This prevents them from opening or falling out during transport.

2. Protecting the furniture itself: The edges of the furniture pieces are often delicate. Moving blankets or foam edge protectors are ideal to prevent scratches and dents.

3. Securing joints: Some MALM furniture screws and connections are not as tight as you might expect. It’s important to check them before transport. Occasionally, it’s worth tightening screws slightly, but don’t overdo it to avoid damaging the material.

4. Transport in the vehicle: Depending on the type of transport you use, it’s best to transport the furniture upright and secure it firmly with straps to prevent slipping. Make sure to use a sufficiently non-slip base, otherwise furniture can slide easily.

Summary: Remove drawers, protect them individually, cushion furniture edges, secure joints, then firmly strap everything in the vehicle. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I agree! That’s brilliant because it really prevents any damage. 🙂 I once wrapped my MALM dresser with stretch film and secured it with tape, and it held up perfectly!

Also: Before moving, secure the drawers from opening by taping them or using non-slip hook-and-loop tape on the inside. This is especially valuable on bumpy roads!

One more tip: When loading, make sure to place the furniture on sturdy crates or wooden boards. MALM furniture is heavy, and if it’s placed directly on the floor of your trunk, moisture or scratches might occur.

All in all – with a bit of preparation, you can save yourself a lot of trouble. Good luck with the move, it’ll work out just fine! :-)

Regarding securing MALM furniture for transport, here is my structured recommendation:

- Remove drawers: Take out all movable parts, including drawers and fixed shelves if possible. Pack these items individually, preferably in sturdy bubble wrap or boxes.

- Protect furniture edges: Use foam edge protectors or thick moving blankets secured with tape. This prevents damage to corners and edges, which often occurs from shocks or bumps.

- Secure in the transport vehicle: Use ratchet straps to fasten the furniture to the walls or anchor points. Furniture should ideally be transported upright to minimize stress on critical joints. A non-slip surface, such as rubber mats, can provide additional stability.

- Secure spare parts: Screws, dowels, or small fittings should be stored in a labeled bag and transported separately to avoid losing any components.

These measures greatly reduce the risk of transport damage. For further details, I can provide various links to transport guides.
