Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Malm drawers, which unfortunately are sticking and no longer open properly. The drawers are stuck and can only be pulled out a short distance with significant force before they stop. I suspect that the drawer slides are not running smoothly or that some parts might be misaligned, but I’m not sure how to fix this best without causing damage. Does anyone have experience with this or tips on how to make Malm drawers run smoothly again when they are sticking? Thanks in advance for your help!
An important point with Malm drawers is the proper handling of the drawer slide mechanism. If the drawer sticks, it could be due to worn or dirty rollers that get jammed in the sliding rails. I recommend fully removing the drawer by pressing the lever or button on both slide rails simultaneously. Then, clean the sliding rails thoroughly and dry them, for example with a lint-free cloth. If lubricants are used, it is best to apply a dry lubricant such as a dry spray or silicone spray to avoid attracting dirt. Additionally, it can help to insert the drawer exactly straight when putting it back in, so the slide rails do not get misaligned. This procedure is safe and prevents damage.
Oh, I know this problem all too well – sometimes Malm drawers just want to do their own thing 😅. My secret tip: gentle force and a little spit (okay, better silicone spray). No joke though, cleaning the runners as Garry described usually works wonders.
That’s the crucial step! When reinserting, just keep it straight, otherwise the drawer will have to learn to whistle again 😂. And if it still sticks, gently help it along with a thin wooden wedge.
Good luck, and don’t be afraid of squeaky drawers – you can definitely fix them 🙂

A strong recommendation: First, all parts of the sliding rails and the rollers should be inspected for visible dirt, bent metal components, or foreign objects.
This assumption is correct, as misalignment of the sliding rails is a common cause of sticking in Malm drawers. Carefully removing the drawer, as described by Garry, is the right step. Afterwards, cleaning the rails is especially important. Cleaning agents that leave no residue should be used to avoid future delays in the mechanism.
Additionally, when reinstalling, it is important to ensure the drawer is guided precisely within the track profile. Unevenness or scratches on the sliding rails can also cause sticking and should be repaired if necessary. If the sliding rails are heavily damaged, replacement is recommended to ensure smooth and long-lasting operation.
