Hello everyone,

I have several Malm dressers from IKEA in use, and I have noticed that opening and closing the drawers is relatively loud and sometimes a bit squeaky. Since I also use the dressers in the bedroom, I would like to know how I can make the Malm dressers quieter.

Perhaps there are proven methods, such as special lubricants, liners, or other technical adjustments that can reduce the noise without damaging the function or the materials.

I would appreciate any tips and experiences!

Hello,

for the MALM dressers, it is recommended to treat the drawer slides with a silicone spray. This significantly reduces friction and noise. Alternatively, felt pads at the contact points can sometimes help. It is important not to use oil-based products, as they can cause the slides to stick.

That’s a good starting point, but I suggest approaching it a bit more systematically. MALM dressers usually have metal drawer slides with plastic runners.

1. First, remove all the drawers completely. Be careful to watch for clips or release mechanisms to avoid damaging the slides.

2. Clean the slides and runners with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust or small particles that could cause squeaking or creaking.

3. Spray the most relevant contact points with a special Teflon or silicone spray—avoid oils or greases, as they attract dirt.

4. Additionally, you can attach small felt or foam strips to the inner edges at the ends of the drawers to cushion the impact when closing. These are especially helpful if the noise is caused by the drawer slamming shut.

5. Check whether the drawers are properly aligned. Sometimes noise results from warped or uneven parts, which can be corrected by slight adjustments or tightening screws.

I’d be interested to know whether your dressers have the standard drawer slides or if you have made any modifications. That can influence the best approach.

I would like to agree with this and add that, in addition to silicone spray, regular cleaning of the drawer slides is important to ensure lasting noise reduction.

Some users have also had good results with special plastic glides that can be replaced for the original parts if these are already heavily worn.

Furthermore, it is important to make sure no loose parts or foreign objects are caught in the drawer slides, as this can also cause creaking or scraping noises.

Overall, I believe a combination of cleaning, lubrication, and, if necessary, small damping inserts is the most effective way to make MALM dressers quieter.
