Hello everyone, I have several Ikea Brimnes drawer dressers at home that I want to modify to be more child-friendly. My main concern is making the drawers safer, as my toddler often tries to open them fully and risks tipping them over or getting fingers caught. Does anyone have experience or proven methods for modifying BRIMNES drawers to be child-safe (e.g., with soft-close mechanisms, child locks, or other measures) without losing their functionality? I am looking for practical tips, instructions, or product recommendations that are easy to implement. Thanks in advance!

In general, the risk of tipping accidents with children should be taken into account. A simple and safe solution is to secure the dresser to the wall using sturdy angle brackets or spacers. When combined with internal child safety locks for the drawers, this creates an effective combination. It is important to ensure that the child safety locks are easy for adults to operate but difficult for children to overcome.

If you want to implement something quickly, I would recommend using the common plastic child safety locks for drawers. They are easy to purchase and do a good job by limiting the pull point. Additionally, they can be easily removed later without any issues.

Thank you for the important tip about tilt accidents, @lyndon, I hadn’t really considered that before. I will definitely pay attention to wall anchoring. A question for everyone: Would you recommend a combination of soft-close dampers and mechanical child safety locks, or is one of these measures usually sufficient? And do any of you have experience with magnetic locks, especially regarding durability and ease of use in daily life?

I consider a combination to be useful. Soft-close prevents doors from slamming shut, while the lock prevents them from opening. Magnetic locks are durable and work quite well, provided you have the correct key.

Magnetic catches are sturdy, but they need to be installed precisely to avoid sticking or malfunctioning. With the Brimnes, you can attach them to the inside of the cabinet back panel to keep them visually unobtrusive.

Personally, I would go for simple clamp or strap fasteners with the BRIMNES. Magnets are nice, but can be a bit fiddly in everyday use. The strap solutions can be attached and removed quickly.
