Hello everyone, I want to furnish my home office with Billy shelves from IKEA, but I have a problem: the room has unusual dimensions, with angled walls and recesses that don’t match the standard sizes of the shelves. My specific question is: how can I integrate Billy shelves into irregular spaces without losing too much storage capacity or affecting the appearance with too many gaps and spaces? Are there clever tricks or modifications that can be used to adapt these shelves to sloped or irregularly shaped walls? I look forward to practical tips and experiences on how you have solved this issue.

I have also considered removing the back panel and using only the side edges to make the depth adjustable – is that practical?Technically, this is possible, but not recommended, as the back panel significantly contributes to stability. Alternatively, thin plywood sheets can be cut and installed as a back panel. Adding angled brackets at the wall and floor also enhances stability. I only recommend removing the original back panel for smaller, lightweight units.
To fit irregular spaces, I recommend creating an accurate measurement sketch and using modular construction methods. A system combining Billy and affordable, flexible shelves or shelving boards with metal brackets can be very useful for sloped areas.
That is a practical approach. Additionally, I recommend sturdy angle brackets and careful sealing of cut edges to prevent moisture damage.
