Hello everyone,

I currently have the following question.

We would like to design our front door without a step leading to the driveway. The problem is that the garage can only be built in a way that results in a height difference of 30 cm (12 inches) between the garage and the front door over a length of 1.58 meters (5.2 feet).

Now my question is: would it work to slope the driveway to the garage by 30 cm (12 inches) over the 1.58 meters (5.2 feet)? Or would this cause problems when driving in or out?

Or is having a step into the house perhaps the better solution?

Maybe the sketch will help in forming an opinion.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Hello,
the ramp would already look quite unusual, and without having calculated it, I could imagine you might have trouble with one or another car.

Since the ground slopes towards the house overall, I would definitely want a step in front of the front door. Otherwise, you’ll get water inside the house every time it rains heavily.

Could you possibly raise the garage a bit?

Regards,

Andreas

Hello,
thank you for the feedback. I share the same concerns. But I had hoped that you might see it differently.

Unfortunately, raising the garage is not possible due to building regulations. It has something to do with the average height. Apparently, this is calculated based on the original terrain profile.

.. I don’t see any problem with the slope; on our hills, you can see much steeper ones.

More likely the latter. A 20% slope is quite steep; even a sporty E-Class might scrape the catalytic converter. Besides, a moat-like driveway also looks quite odd.

That would mean two height differences, equal to one step.

... with us, even the lowered sports cars scrape at the crest – that's not my problem if someone drives such a pointless toy. They just have to leave it at the top or come next time with a proper car.
