ᐅ Green flat roof and photovoltaic system

Hello everyone,

the development plan applicable to our construction project requires a green flat roof. However, we would also like to install a photovoltaic system on the roof. The building site is in Hesse. A preliminary online search combining these two terms showed that they do not necessarily exclude each other.

Are there any experiences or tips regarding the permits, or is this a hopeless endeavor?

Best regards!

Where did you buy that? I want to add greenery here as well, but I’m having a hard time finding something under 40€/m² (around $43/m²).

My dad runs his own business in this field, so these are wholesale prices. However, if you talk to a building materials supplier, you should be able to get a discount of around 20–30%. That’s how I managed it for my garden. You just have to talk to the right people.

Green roofing is really not complicated. You just need a crane to lift the substrate onto the roof.

We have installed our photovoltaic system suspended above the green roof of our storage building, and it works perfectly! I will share photos later. Of course, it requires investment and effort, but it will provide almost maintenance-free operation for a very long time. For hot days, we also added a sprinkler system, so nothing dries out during the summer, and the photovoltaic modules are cooled from the back. This results in approximately 0.5 to 0.8 kW additional output from the 9.9 kWp system after about 15 minutes of irrigation.

Best regards,
Uli

The problem is that the architect thinks that photovoltaic systems and green roofs are mutually exclusive.

We have just submitted our building permit / planning permission application here in Hesse, including both a green roof and photovoltaic panels. According to the development plan, this is allowed, and our architect has no issues with it either. The other posts here also show that this combination works well.
