ᐅ Grass and weeds grow through the joints between paving stones.

Hello,

Last year, a landscaping company paved several areas and pathways in our garden. No sealing was applied to these surfaces. According to the company, this was "not necessary." We are now beginning to regret that...

This year, we have noticed grass and weeds growing through the joints in several places. Removing them with a joint scraper is almost impossible because the joints are very narrow, and the roots grow quite deep.

The fact is, something needs to be done. I have already considered some options like flame weeding and pressure washing. What are your experiences? What methods provide lasting results?

I am now thinking about thoroughly cleaning everything and then applying a joint sealant afterward. What type of material would you recommend for this?

Best regards

But the DanSand really works quite well. You pour it out, sweep it in, then spray it with water, leave it alone, and the joints become rock hard—it’s like there’s cement mixed in. And they stay hard. No chance for weed seeds.

Asphalt recessed on both sides with root barrier installed, and that’s it.

Don’t be so stingy. You pressure wash them away, I just don’t let them grow in the first place; it’s the same result in the end. We also don’t use Roundup or similar products in our garden. Karsten

I pressure wash it away if the dirt gets stuck. One leg just can’t be lifted anymore.

And this isn’t picky, it’s a solution that really lasts a long time.
No dirt from the sides, no dirt from below, no dirt from above, no joints.

For our terrace made with 10x20x8 cm (4x8x3 inches) bricks, pressure washing doesn’t last long and exposes the joints. It’s not ideal, but it’s good enough for us.
If you want it “perfect,” natural methods won’t be enough once growth has started.
With professional installation, you can definitely expect “growth-free” results if this was explicitly discussed during the consultation beforehand.

And how would that work? If it were that simple, no one would have to scrape weeds out of the joints or remove them with a pressure washer anymore.
