Hello dear forum members,

As part of our upcoming renovation, we had originally decided on oak engineered parquet to be glued down.

During the preliminary work for installing a fireplace, it was discovered that our screed is made of mastic asphalt screed.

Our house was built in 1970, so the mastic asphalt screed is quite old.

We have now been warned that gluing parquet on this type of substrate is extremely problematic and that we should rather install a floating floor or use tiles instead!!???!!

Since two walls will also be removed in our space, connecting the screed areas will be difficult.

We wanted to cover the entire living/dining/entrance and kitchen area with engineered parquet because the space will be open and we want to avoid different floor coverings.

What should we do now????? Does anyone have experience with mastic asphalt screed?

Thank you and best regards
Ingrid

Cast asphalt itself is not a problem since the introduction of the hybrid adhesive. It is a silicone-like flexible adhesive that does not transfer the stresses of the parquet flooring.

A primer would be necessary, and if possible, the surface should be leveled beforehand with a flexible, plastic-reinforced leveling compound applied to 3mm (0.12 inches).

The adhesive costs about 7€ per kilogram (kg) and can be purchased from Retol or a flooring wholesaler.

It might be a good idea to consult a technician for precise advice.

In my opinion, industrial parquet should work well in this case.
