We are currently trying to decide what kind of decorative fence to put at the front. Since it’s 40 meters (130 feet), it’s not a quick job. Unfortunately, it’s starting to look like it will turn into a lot of work.

At the moment, I’m leaning towards a wooden fence with a stone base underneath. Since our carport and shed are already made of wood, this would probably fit best visually. Metal would, of course, be more durable—but it’s also more expensive and doesn’t match as well. I would also like a hedge, but my husband isn’t satisfied with that, and the shrubs grow very slowly here.

What have you all done? Could you share some photos? Thanks!

Do you have a development plan / zoning plan? If so, definitely take a look beforehand. Almost every plan includes a clause that foundation walls are not allowed because they obstruct the paths of small animals. Just a tip!

In our case, the front yard will likely be visually separated from the public path using low-growing shrubs. However, this requires that our pit is eventually filled with the house [emoji6].

The horizontal wooden slats that the development plan often recommends definitely won’t be used, as they don’t fit aesthetically and we don’t feel like painting a fence.

Fences are not specified in our development plan.
The base wall would only be on the street side. So it’s more like protection for crawling animals. The rest is a wildlife fence with a hedge next to it.

We and all our neighbors have agreed not to have any fences at all. Now, we all have hedges at the back, nothing between the properties, and nothing at the front. At first, it felt strange, but now I can't imagine it any other way. It looks much more harmonious and inviting.

I would also like an open front, but I’m not sure yet if dogs pooping and marking their territory might become an issue. How is it for you?

We regularly have dog poop on the lawn. It doesn’t bother me. I just clean it up and that’s it. But my husband is angry at the owners.
I also like these open plots without fences. But everyone else already has fences. So at the moment, it looks kind of odd that we don’t have one.
