Hello,
Our house dates back to 1962, and the garage roof expands slightly due to heat from the sun in summer. This causes cracks in the walls and prevents us from plastering the walls.
I want to protect the roof from the heat (sun) and am looking for ideas.
Currently, I am considering two options: either protecting it with gravel or, more complex and expensive, with a green roof for the garage.
Does anyone have other ideas or experience with these two options?
At the moment, the roof is sealed with roofing felt.
Thank you very much

This is actually very simple. The basement is larger than the upper floor, and at the spot where we want to add greenery, I can easily access the roof from my bay window to water and pull weeds 🙂 So that point doesn’t worry me. We were already aware of that.
We’ll see. The roofer’s prices were quite outrageous, and the landscaper starts work in the garden on Monday and, to my knowledge, also offers something like this. I’ll contact him again regarding prices...

Since our roof area is 60m² (650 sq ft), we won’t be doing it ourselves. It probably won’t happen this year either, as everyone is fully booked 😉 .
I don’t have to pay for the root barrier layer; the roofer is unintentionally covering that cost because he made a mistake and didn’t weld the correct bitumen membrane 😉
So, I need aggregate and soil mixed with seed mixture.
I have looked at those ready-made mats for planting. It might be simple to use them, but I don’t want to have that much waste on the roof – the mats are made of plastic forms.

How do you arrive at these prices? I was quoted around €80 per square meter (approximately $85 per square yard) for the installation alone, and the materials alone cost about €40 per square meter (approximately $43 per square yard).
We have over 30 square meters (approximately 320 square feet) of carport area, which we are legally required to green. If there is a cost-effective solution, I would appreciate any tips.
Best regards,
Andreas
