Hello and good morning,

our single-family house is finally finished, and I’ve been struggling with the landscaping for some time. We built on a slope, so you can enter the ground floor at street level in the front and reach the garden 11 meters (36 feet) further through the basement. To reduce the height difference somewhat, we would like to retain the slope a bit and raise the property along the borders, increasing the ground level by up to 100 cm (40 inches).

For the edging along the boundary, I was thinking of using gabions placed on a gravel bed. However, I am not entirely sure what dimensions they should have. Would 100 x 100 x 50 cm (40 x 40 x 20 inches) be sufficient to hold the soil in place? Or would 100 x 100 x 30 cm (40 x 40 x 12 inches) cubes with support bars anchored in the foundation be enough? Or do we need 100 x 100 x 100 cm (40 x 40 x 40 inches) blocks to securely retain the soil mass? The difference in height is only about 100 cm (40 inches) above street level.

Thank you very much for any advice and tips.

Good luck, nabonid

Doesn't the water first pass through the soil and then through the gabion? Just use L-shaped stones and attach battens to them if the appearance is a concern.

You can contact the manufacturers of the gabions; usually, you will receive a recommendation on what to use.

We don’t need to make it completely waterproof. I estimate that a 50mm (2 inches) box will hold. We have retained 1m (3 feet) of soil with crushed stone. That holds up as well. See photo.
