Dear all,

Attached is the current floor plan of our family bathroom. The masons will start working on the interior walls in the next few days.
We decided not to separate the toilet with a sliding door, so the walls will not be full height but only 1.20 m (4 feet) high as simple privacy walls. The short wall section extending by the partition next to the bathtub will be omitted.
We expect this will create a slightly more spacious feeling and allow more light into the bathroom, which is not very large anyway.

Overall, we like the layout quite well, but it doesn’t really create a "wow" effect. So our question is: could it be improved significantly, or should we leave it as it is?

The window side faces east, and the right side on the plan faces north. The windows and utility room positions are fixed. Doors can be adjusted.

I would access the utility room from the hallway. Not only does having the door there limit the bathroom layout, it also makes the bathroom feel less comfortable since it functions as a passageway—at least in terms of atmosphere. If not in the bathroom, where else can you relax undisturbed? Besides, it adds independence. If someone wants peace and quiet while showering or bathing, someone else can still use the laundry room.

Also, you don’t need to enter the utility room every time, but only occasionally. There is no reason not to have the door open from the hallway.

I would not store medication in the same room as the clothes dryer due to the temperature.

Yes, I'm also quite surprised that you want to access the bathroom through the utility room. That would be a last resort if no other option is possible. But not if you can enter directly from the hallway.

So, put the utility room door opening to the hallway and then redesign the bathroom. There are several options. Here are two rough layout plans I came up with. Maybe others have more ideas.

We also have the door in the bathroom. It’s not a makeshift solution. It’s perfect. The door probably opens and closes about 20 times a day, and each time it’s just one step.

?huh? To get to the utility room, it’s not just one step. You have to go through the bathroom first. And if you need to go from the bathroom to the utility room 20 times, in my opinion, that’s a design flaw because you must have something in the utility room that really belongs in the bathroom.

A laundry room that can only be accessed through the bathroom is at least "separate." I would not want that. I have seen such layouts in houses that have been extended several times.

I would prefer a wide sink that two people can use simultaneously over two separate sinks.
A privacy screen is generally fine – is that the only toilet in the house?
There are shower-bath combinations with a low threshold that save space. That might be a good option to ease the layout.
