Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience with wireless thermostats for underfloor heating? Viessmann offers something like this, but other manufacturers probably have similar products as well. There seem to be very few if any reviews or user reports available online.

I find the idea quite appealing since you don’t have to run 12/24/230-volt wiring between the manifold and the room thermostat. That could easily offset the additional cost of the wireless thermostats and the receiver at the manifold. Plus, you can easily change the position of the thermostat in the room later if needed. Just mount it on the wall wherever you want, and that’s it.

Only two questions come to mind:

1. These devices run on batteries or rechargeable batteries. How long do they last? It would be annoying to have to replace the batteries every week in 12 wireless thermostats throughout the house.

2. What about the signal range? For the upstairs underfloor heating, the manifold will likely be on the same floor, so only the attenuation from the brick walls applies. That should be fine. But the second manifold (for the ground floor and basement) will probably be in the utility room in the basement. So the wireless thermostats on the ground floor would have to communicate through the concrete ceiling between basement and ground floor. And reinforced concrete is usually quite bad for radio signals…

So, has anyone installed something like this and can share positive or negative experiences?

Thanks and best regards,

Andreas

Why do you assume that the distributor for the ground floor is located in the basement? That would not be beneficial for ventilation either... Normally, each floor has its distributor on the respective level.

That would immediately solve a problem for you.

That's right, you are correct. That would mean having 3 distributors, one on each floor. That should work.
The question remains about the endurance of the batteries/rechargeable batteries?!?

Andreas

Just ask Viessmann directly – I suspect that the batteries need to be replaced every 1-2 years, as anything else hardly makes sense.

But as I said, that’s just a guess.

Of course, the inquiry is already being sent out. However, based on experience, there are often significant differences between manufacturer specifications and actual use cases... ;-)
